A private investigator — also known as a PI, Private Detective or Private Eye — is someone that is hired to undertake an investigation. Most states, including Oregon, require PIs to be trained and licensed. Investigators often have a military and/or law enforcement background.
Law firms, corporations, insurance companies, private parties and entities.
Private Investigator license information is public record and can be verified through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Search Private Investigators and click on the IRIS icon to search by name or license number.
This depends on the type of investigation provided. Most investigations are billed at an hourly rate (not including any incurred expenses), but for simpler cases, a flat fee agreement may be reached. Please see additional information under the "Forms and Fees" tab.
Private investigators offer a wide range of services in both investigation and consultation. Investigators are often hired by law firms to gather information or provide consultation on civil and/or defense cases. Insurance companies hire investigators to look into suspicious injury or fraud cases. Private individuals hire investigators to provide surveillance, locate missing people, assist with civil cases, etc.
A large majority of investigative/detective work is spent in the field performing surveillance and completing interviews. Many investigators do computer searches, background checks and make phone calls to gather data. Investigators regularly provide detailed reports on their findings and testify in court on behalf of their clients, as required.
Private Investigators have access to a lot of information that the general public is unable to obtain. However, they must abide by all state and federal laws. Private Investigators may not impersonate a law enforcement officer, trespass illegally onto personal property, hack into private accounts, or otherwise commit criminal acts in order to gain information. GPS tracking is permitted only with express permission of the owner of a device and/or vehicle.
As part of their surveillance and other services, private investigators may use a variety of devices., depending on the case. The rules regarding the use of different devices vary by state and jurisdiction. Private investigators may use binoculars, extension lens, digital cameras, hidden cameras and night vision cameras. They may also use debugging equipment, recording devices and tracking equipment.
